Dental implants
Transform your teeth
Dental implants offer a permanent solution that can last longer than a bridge or a denture. Whether you want to replace one or several missing teeth, dental implants are a great option. Dental implants are a straightforward process that can be carried out under local anaesthetic.
What are the benefits of dental implants?
- Confidence booster
- Easy to look after and clean the same way as the rest of your teeth
- Allow you to chew and speak easily
- Improve your mental well-being
- Help you to look younger
- Reduce bone loss and maintain the existing jaw bone level that can be caused by missing teeth
- Stop nearby teeth from shifting due to gaps
- Dentures have a stigma and can feel bulky. Implants aren’t removable like a denture and offer a more natural-looking appearance

Dental implant process
Consultation
We will carry out a thorough initial assessment of your suitability for a dental implant. Following this, we will plan and schedule your treatment with you.
Scan
We will arrange a jaw scan to detect the quality and thickness of the bone. We use this scan to plan the best way to treat you.
Placing the implant
The first surgical stage is the placement of the dental implant into the jawbone. This needs time to integrate and stabilise under the gum.
Restoration
Once the gum tissue has healed around the abutment (usually one week later) the final stage involves the fabrication and placement of the artificial tooth or crown.
Abutment placement
Once the implant has fully integrated with the jawbone, an abutment is attached. This is a connector that protrudes through the gum line and onto which the artificial tooth or crown will be attached. This is done under local anaesthetic.
Healing time
It takes 3-6 months for the dental implant to heal and integrate with your jawbone in order for it to provide a solid support for your replacement teeth. Temporary replacement teeth are usually fitted so you are not left with any gaps while you wait for the implant to heal.
Follow up
Regular follow-up visits will be needed to monitor the healing and keep an eye on the stability of the implant. At Duston Dental Practice, we offer full aftercare support and maintenance to our implant patients.

Frequently asked questions
A dental implant is used to replace a missing tooth. It is a titanium screw that is surgically inserted into the jawbone and then serves as a root for an artificial tooth. A crown, bridge or denture can be fitted on top. They can be made to look and feel like natural teeth and are a permanent solution. A dental implant consists of 3 components – the titanium screw (the implant) an abutment (the connecting section) and a crown, bridge or denture (the tooth.)
If you are missing an entire tooth or part of one, have a loose tooth or old age has weakened a tooth, dental implants may be right for you. If you’re in good health and have sufficient jawbone you may be a good candidate for dental implants. A thorough assessment by a dentist qualified in implantology will be necessary to determine this.
